The Carolinas Aviation Museum, located on the grounds of Charlotte/Douglas International Airport in Charlotte, North Carolina is now an official member of the Smithsonian Institution’s Affiliations Program.
The mission of Smithsonian Affiliations is to share the extraordinary resources of the Smithsonian Institution with Americans in their own communities by developing collaborative partnerships with museums, cultural and educational organizations.
With this affiliation The Carolinas Aviation Museum will be able to access to the Smithsonian collection of artifacts, research experts, consulting, training and partnerships and grant projects, according to a press release distributed by the museum.
The museum has gained national attention in recent years for acquiring the famous aircraft that was US Airways 1549, the plane Capt. Sully Sullenberger landed on the Hudson River in January of 2009. The Museum, in conjunction with the North Carolina School of the Arts Film School is producing a movie about the project to save, move, reassemble, and display the famous passenger jet. The movie should be completed sometime in the middle of 2013.
