WarbirdsNews has oft-touted this amazing event, but in case you needed a reminder the Warbirds Over the Beach air show will take place at the Military Aviation Museum in Pungo, Virginia this coming weekend (May 15th-17th). Friday, May 15th is the practice day, so the flying will be fairly informal, but every bit as exciting. There is also a steak dinner with great period music and dancing on the Saturday evening (although dance only tickets are required if not attending the airshow- Click HERE).
Warbirds Over the Beach is one of the most intimate air shows anywhere in the US, and allows the visitors to get up close to the aircraft, both in the static display areas, and alongside the runway as well. The beautiful grass airstrip, set against the trees provides a perfect photographic opportunity for even the least experienced photographer to capture a fabulous image of aircraft taking off and landing.
The flying schedule is relatively informal and aircraft take off and land regularly, but there are so many other fascinating things to see at the show varying from the myriad re-enactors’ camps, to the original WWII Luftwaffe hangar, filled with German aircraft.
WWII veteran pilots can often be found to chat with at tables set up in the main hangar. There’s also a faithful replica of a WWI-era hangar packed with several dozen replica WWI aircraft as well.
The show will feature many of the amazing aircraft in the Military Aviation Museum’s collection, including their ultra-rare flying deHavilland Mosquito FB.26. The Dixie Wing of the Commemorative Air Force will also be sending their Douglas SBD-5 Dauntless and P-51D Mustang “Red Nose”. Both aircraft, and others, will be available to give rides to the visiting public (following a suitable donation). The Military Aviation Museum’s Stearman biplane will also be available for rides, alongside Bay Aviation’s PT-19. Click HERE for details on how you can go flying! Warbirds Over the Beach is easily amongst the best air shows in the world, and the Military Aviation Museum is amongst the top flying museums as well…. If you haven’t been yet, GO!!!
