Live Demonstration Flight of the Lockheed P-38 Lightning at Planes of Fame

This Saturday, June 5, 2021 the Planes of Fame Air Museum will be hosting a Flying Demo with the flight of the Museum’s Lockheed P-38 “Lightning” fighter. The event begins at 11:45am with a brief outdoor presentation about the “Lightning” and its role during World War II and post-war. Following the presentation, the aircraft will start its engine and taxi away and then fly over the Museum for approximately 20 minutes.

Including its wartime service with the Army Air Corps, 44-23314 had a total of only 121hr on its airframe before restoration. During World War II, this aircraft remained in the United States. During 1945, assigned to Hancock Field School of Aeronautics at Santa Monica, CA and used as an instructional airframe. In 1954. placed into open storage at Lavern-Brackett Field, CA. Purchased by Jack P. Hardwick of El Monte CA. In December 1959 the airplane was acquired by Edward Maloney. One of the most recent Lightning to be restored to flying condition is P-38J-20-LO serial 44-23314 which, after 28 years of inactivity, took to the skies once more at the Chino Airport in Southern California on July 22, 1988.

 The aircraft flight will be visible from all the outdoor areas of the Museum campus. Doors to the Museum open at 10:00am. Moreno Aguiari

Born in Milan, Italy, Moreno moved to the U.S. in 1999 to pursue a career as a commercial pilot. His aviation passion began early, inspired by his uncle, an F-104 Starfighter Crew Chief, and his father, a military traffic controller. Childhood adventures included camping outside military bases and watching planes at Aeroporto Linate. In 1999, he relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, to obtain his commercial pilot license, a move that became permanent. With 24 years in the U.S., he now flies full-time for a Part 91 business aviation company in Atlanta. He is actively involved with the Commemorative Air Force, the D-Day Squadron, and other aviation organizations. He enjoys life with his supportive wife and three wonderful children.
