Another stunning aircraft was listed this week for sale by Platinum Fighter Sales, the leading warbird and vintage aircraft dealer. This award-winning North American P-51D Mustang, “Cripes A’ Mighty,” has 468 hours since its complete restoration by Midwest Aero Restorations, Ltd. It was the 2002 EAA AirVenture Grand Champion Warbird and Golden Wrench Winner. “This Mustang has been impeccably maintained and operated. It is a 10/10,” said Simon Brown, president of Platinum Fighter Sales.
The restoration of the North American P-51D Mustang, serial number 44-74813, by Midwest Aero Restorations is a homage to Major George Preddy, the highest-scoring P-51 Mustang ace of World War II, who tragically lost his life to friendly fire on Christmas Day, 1944. This project embodies the shop’s dedication to historical accuracy and craftsmanship, setting a new standard for preserving the warbird legacy and honoring the memory of one of aviation’s greatest heroes.
Constructed in mid-1945 at Inglewood, California, this North American P-51D Mustang was initially taken into storage by the US Army Air Force under serial number 44-74813. It transitioned to the US Air Force in 1947, remaining in storage, and was redesignated as an F-51D in 1948. On January 10, 1951, the aircraft was transferred to the Royal Canadian Air Force, becoming Mustang IV serial number 9261. It later transitioned into civilian hands, undergoing various restorations and registrations.
Undertaken for Ken Wagnon, the meticulous restoration of “Cripes A’ Mighty” aimed to replicate the iconic aircraft as it would have appeared at the end of Major Preddy’s distinguished service. Midwest Aero Restorations’ commitment to authenticity guided every step, from sourcing period-correct parts to applying the distinctive paint scheme and markings associated with Major Preddy. This endeavor, fueled by extensive research and deep respect for wartime history, ensures that the aircraft represents a tangible connection to Major Preddy’s legacy and the broader narrative of World War II aviation.
In embracing this project, Midwest Aero Restorations sought to do more than merely rebuild a vintage aircraft; they aimed to resurrect a piece of history. This restoration celebrates not just the mechanical marvel of the P-51 Mustang but also the spirit of bravery and sacrifice it represents. “Cripes A’ Mighty” stands as a testament to the ability to blend historic preservation with the technical demands of warbird restoration, ensuring that the aircraft maintains its authentic character while incorporating modern enhancements for safety and reliability.
Midwest Aero Restorations’ work on “Cripes A’ Mighty” highlights the ongoing relevance of warbirds in preserving military aviation heritage, allowing future generations to witness the majesty of these aircraft and the stories of valor they encapsulate. By dedicating this restoration to Major George Preddy and all who served alongside him, we honor their contributions to freedom and aviation, ensuring that their heroic tales continue to inspire and educate. Through meticulous restoration and dedicated homage, “Cripes A’ Mighty” flies once again, a moving tribute to Major Preddy’s enduring legacy in the skies.
