The Warbird Heritage Foundation of Waukegan, Illinois has recently acquired a Goodyear FG-1D Corsair 92050, N194G. The plane which was surplussed from military service in 1963 was extensively modified to run in the Reno Air Races in the early seventies, its engine replaced and wingtips cut off. The museum intends to restore the plane, which has been in storage since 1977, to its original configuration over the next three to five years.

The Chance Vought F4U Corsair was a carrier-capable fighter aircraft that primarily saw service World War II and the Korean War and was produced from 1942 to 1953. During World War II, demand for the aircraft outstripped Vought’s capacity to manufacture them so Goodyear and Brewster built copies of the planes designated FG and F3A respectively. Over the course of the run, over 12,000 of the planes were produced by Vought and examples of the plane were in active military service (albeit for Honduras) until 1979.

The Corsair will be joining an impressive fleet of meticulously-restored and in flying condition aircraft which includes a North American F-86F-30 Sabre, P-51D Mustang, T-2 Buckeye, T-28B Trojan, AT-6G Texan, a Douglas A-4B Skyhawk, AD-1 Skyraider, a Cessna 305A, a Boeing N2S-3 Stearman and an Aero L-39 Albatros which the foundation campaigns to air shows across the country.
