The restoration of Boeing N2S-2 Stearman Bu.No 03531 by the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Airbase Georgia continues to progress steadily at its hangar in Peachtree City, Georgia. Since late 2019, the dedicated team of volunteers has been working on the project, and significant advancements have been made since the last major update in late 2021.

Over the past year, the team has fully assembled the fuselage structure, meticulously inspecting each part before bead blasting, priming, and painting the sections. With the structural work complete, the electrical system and wiring were installed, allowing for the integration of instrumentation. Additional components, including the seats, control linkages, various connections, and the firewall, have also been installed. The landing gear underwent reconditioning, and new Redline brakes were added to enhance safety and functionality. A key milestone was recently achieved when the fuselage, with the landing gear attached, was removed from the rotisserie.

In recent months, volunteers have been focused on covering the airframe with fabric, a process that has now been completed. The next steps will involve painting the aircraft and reassembling its components in preparation for flight.

CAF Airbase Georgia undertook this restoration as part of its mission to educate and inspire students, particularly middle and high school girls, to explore careers in aviation. The project aims to encourage more women to become involved in the Commemorative Air Force while also introducing students to the story of Rosie the Riveter and America’s military aviation history. Through its collection of aircraft, artifacts, and educational programs aligned with Georgia classroom standards, the organization seeks to make history come alive for future generations. While the initial estimate for the aircraft’s first flight was optimistic, the team remains hopeful that the Stearman will take to the skies by the end of summer.
