French-American pilot Gervais Raoul Lufbery was born on this day in 1885.  He was a flying ace during World War I, serving mostly with the French and later with the United States Army Air Service in combatting the Germans.  He first flew with fellow Americans in the Lafayette Escadrille before later being dubbed Major.
