The newly released schedule outlines the major UK and European airshows at which the BBMF is set to perform, with the Lancaster, Spitfires, and Hurricanes once again expected to captivate audiences with their powerful tribute to ‘The Few.’

The Royal Air Force Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) is based at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire. Its core mission is to preserve and fly some of the most iconic aircraft in British aviation history, keeping them airworthy as a tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation. In addition to honoring the past, the BBMF plays an important role in promoting today’s Royal Air Force and inspiring future generations.

The BBMF fleet includes five Supermarine Spitfires, two Hawker Hurricanes, an Avro Lancaster bomber, a Douglas C-47 Dakota, and two de Havilland Chipmunks, which are primarily used for training purposes. These historic aircraft are flown by serving RAF pilots. From May through September, these warbirds are frequently seen soaring across UK skies as they participate in a wide range of commemorative and ceremonial events. The BBMF takes part in everything from state occasions like Trooping the Colour to major airshows and public flypasts.

A Brief History
The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight was officially established on 11 July 1957 at RAF Biggin Hill, originally known as the RAF Historic Aircraft Flight. The founding fleet consisted of three Spitfire PR Mk XIXs and the RAF’s last remaining airworthy Hurricane, LF363. The unit was later renamed the Battle of Britain Flight, and in 1969 received its current name.

Between 1959 and 1965, the Flight operated a single Spitfire (PM631) and one Hurricane (LF363). Today, the BBMF has grown into what many call a “museum without walls,” preserving a fleet of eleven rare and historic aircraft: one Avro Lancaster, one Dakota, five Spitfires, two Hurricanes, and a pair of Chipmunks. BBMF remains a fully operational RAF unit, staffed by active-duty personnel and supported by the UK Ministry of Defence.

Motto
“Lest We Forget” – This solemn motto encapsulates the Flight’s mission to honor the memory of the thousands of men and women—pilots, aircrew, and ground personnel—who gave their lives in the cause of freedom. The 2025 season once again offers aviation enthusiasts countless opportunities to witness these legendary aircraft take to the skies in honour of the RAF’s heritage and sacrifice.
