By Richard Mallory Allnutt For over forty years, anyone with even a passing interest in vintage military aircraft has likely come across, and been inspired by, the incredible work of renowned aerial photographer Philip Makanna. His stunning photographs have graced the pages of numerous magazines and books, but he is perhaps best known for his iconic GHOSTS calendars. These calendars, which have adorned the walls of homes and aircraft hangars worldwide since 1981, are beloved by aviation enthusiasts. Personally, I received my first GHOSTS calendar as a Christmas gift during my college years in the mid-80s, and I’ve collected nearly every edition since. Printed on thick, glossy paper, these full-sized calendars are famous not only for their top-notch quality but also for their breathtaking images. They’re so well-crafted that, unlike most calendars, many people hold onto them long after the year is up. Who among us hasn’t cut out a favorite image to frame or display in a cherished spot? (I know I have!) Makanna’s eye for lighting and composition gives his images a timeless appeal, perfectly capturing the essence of both the aircraft and the era they represent. As with recent years, the 2022 collection offers two editions – one featuring WWII aircraft and another showcasing planes from WWI. Details for the WWII edition are below, followed by information on the WWI version. The FORTY-FIFTH edition of the Ultimate Aviation Calendar. Click HERE to purchase it.

Richard Mallory Allnutt's aviation passion ignited at the 1974 Farnborough Airshow. Raised in 1970s Britain, he was immersed in WWII aviation lore. Moving to Washington DC, he frequented the Smithsonian’s National Air & Space Museum, meeting aviation legends.
After grad school, Richard worked for Lockheed-Martin but stayed devoted to aviation, volunteering at museums and honing his photography skills. In 2013, he became the founding editor of Warbirds News, now Vintage Aviation News. With around 800 articles written, he focuses on supporting grassroots aviation groups.
Richard values the connections made in the aviation community and is proud to help grow Vintage Aviation News.
