The Houston Wing of the Commemorative Air Force held their annual Open House and Fly In over the weekend of April 12th/13th, with more than twenty warbirds and vintage aircraft in attendance.
Idyllic spring weather on the Saturday drew strong crowds. They clearly enjoyed the sights and sounds on display, being able to get up close and personal to the aircraft and their pilots. Wonderful photo opportunities abounded, but highlights of the show must include the Houston Wing’s Lockheed C-60 Lodestar, the world’s only authentic airworthy example, alongside a stunning P-51D Mustang and TBM-3 Avenger from the locally-based Texas Flying Legends Museum. The CAF’s Tora Tora Tora squadron contributed one of their replica Nakajima B5N Kate torpedo bombers and the CAF P-40M also visited. Two North American T-28’s joined in the fun as well as several T-6’s, a pair of Yak-52’s and a brace of T-34’s. The Houston Wing trainers plus a North American L-17 Navion sold rides to lucky people all day long.
Sunday saw good crowds as well, despite the sporadic drizzle and gray skies. A Beech 18 and a Tora Tora Tora Squadron A6M Zero replica added to Saturday’s mix of aircraft, but the uncertain weather caused a few aircraft to leave early. However, the Houston Wing’s aircraft were busy flying paying passengers in spite of the moody skies, while other aircraft made a few formation flights.

Born in Milan, Italy, Moreno moved to the U.S. in 1999 to pursue a career as a commercial pilot. His aviation passion began early, inspired by his uncle, an F-104 Starfighter Crew Chief, and his father, a military traffic controller. Childhood adventures included camping outside military bases and watching planes at Aeroporto Linate. In 1999, he relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, to obtain his commercial pilot license, a move that became permanent. With 24 years in the U.S., he now flies full-time for a Part 91 business aviation company in Atlanta. He is actively involved with the Commemorative Air Force, the D-Day Squadron, and other aviation organizations. He enjoys life with his supportive wife and three wonderful children.
