PRESS RELEASE – An historic and never-to-be-repeated event will take place at RAF Waddington on Thursday 21st August when three world-famous aircraft from the Avro stable the Avro ‘sisters’ – Vulcan XH558, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Lancaster PA474 and the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum Lancaster FM213 will fly in for the first and last time. The Vulcan will be landing at Waddington on the afternoon of Wednesday 20th August and the two Lancasters will be arriving at the base on Thursday morning. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see these iconic aircraft gathered together. There will be the chance to photograph this unique line-up when the three aircraft are positioned together to guarantee excellent opportunities to capture this iconic event. The event which has been organised by the Vulcan to the Sky Trust (VTST), the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) and the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum (CWHM) is the result of a very long and involved period of precise and complex planning and preparation, not least because of the different performance levels of these vintage aircraft.
The aircraft plan to take off from Waddington one after the other at approximately 13 30 and then fly in formation over Canwick Hill in Lincoln, to salute the turf-cutting ceremony for the new Bomber Command Memorial at the International Bomber Command Centre, and continue in formation onto Metheringham, RAF Coningsby and finally, RAF Marham. Bill Ramsey, who will be the Captain of the Vulcan for the flight and who has also flown the BBMF Lancaster, will be leading this exciting formation commented: ”I don’t think that there is much doubt that this will be my favourite-ever day in aviation, or certainly close to it. This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and it is going to be a very special day indeed.”
The Vulcan to the Sky Trust (VTST) have launched a Three Avro Meeting dedicated share issue priced at £15 per share which will enable the public to help to cover both the cost of the Vulcan’s transit sortie to Waddington, the cost of the logistical equipment and support team and the formation flight with the Lancasters. A total of just 558 shares will be available; those who donate will receive a special dedicated commemorative certificate to mark this historic event.
