The Yorkshire Air Museum, Elvington, York, UK, will host its annual Women’s Services Memorial Day on Aug. 9, bringing together representatives from military organizations and veterans’ associations to honor the service and sacrifice of women in Britain’s armed forces. The event will take place at the museum’s site at the former RAF Elvington and will include a parade, wreath-laying ceremony, memorial service, and the unveiling of a new commemorative plaque. Around 30 representatives from the Royal Air Force, Women’s Services Associations, and the Royal British Legion are expected to participate in a parade across the museum grounds before gathering at the Women’s Memorial Garden for a wreath-laying ceremony. North Yorkshire Deputy Lieutenant Countess Peel will unveil a plaque dedicated to the Association of Royal Air Force Women Officers in the company of Royal Air Force Squadron Leader Fiona Morgan-Frise.
Subject to weather and aircraft serviceability, the event will also feature a flypast by an aircraft from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. The program begins at 1 p.m. with a parade and salute in the museum’s main square led by the Yorkshire Military Marching Band & Corps of Drums. The wreath-laying ceremony follows at 1:10 p.m., with a memorial service in the museum chapel beginning at 1:30 p.m. The Yorkshire Air Museum’s Women’s Memorial Garden is home to memorials and plaques recognizing several women’s military organizations, including the Women’s Royal Air Force, Air Transport Auxiliary, Women’s Royal Army Corps, and Women’s Auxiliary Air Force.
