Minor teething pains from the restoration manifested themselves with minor issues with the rudder trim, but the test flight otherwise went smoothly, the rudder was soon set right and the next day the plane flew to Ski-Edeby Airfield near Stockholm where it will be based until it is fully air-certified.
Built in 1940, this Klemm 35D is equipped with the rare for this model, enclosed cockpit. It was originally owned by the Swedish Aero Club. The plane was commandeered by the Swedish military on May 4, 1942 and while under military control went by 5087 with the code 8-87. The plane returned to civilian hands and it’s original registration SE-AKN on August 12,1944 and had a number of owners before being purchased by a Danish aviation museum in 1960.
The plane returned to Sweden in 2003 when it was bought by a Swedish collector who eventually sold the plane to Joakim Westh in 2009. There are three other airworthy Klemm KI 35s in Sweden, SE-BGA, SE-BPT and SE BPU, all based in Hatunaholm.
Born in Milan, Italy, Moreno moved to the U.S. in 1999 to pursue a career as a commercial pilot. His aviation passion began early, inspired by his uncle, an F-104 Starfighter Crew Chief, and his father, a military traffic controller. Childhood adventures included camping outside military bases and watching planes at Aeroporto Linate. In 1999, he relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, to obtain his commercial pilot license, a move that became permanent. With 24 years in the U.S., he now flies full-time for a Part 91 business aviation company in Atlanta. He is actively involved with the Commemorative Air Force, the D-Day Squadron, and other aviation organizations. He enjoys life with his supportive wife and three wonderful children.
