The San Diego Aerospace Museum San Diego Aerospace Museum or SDASM is California’s “Official Air and Space Museum,” one of the four largest aviation and space museums in the country and is home to the third largest aviation archives and library. It was established on October 12, 1961 when the idea for the museum was presented to then-Mayor Charles Dail. Dail recommended a vacant building in Balboa Park as an ideal location and the City Council ratified the proposal. Charles Brown was selected as the Museum’s first executive director and worked untiringly to make the dream a reality. On February 15, 1963, the San Diego Aerospace Museum opened its doors to the public for the first time.
The museum has several exhibits dedicated to aerial combat, including World War I where there’s a section dedicated to the barnstormers of the 1920s in the Golden Age of Flight Gallery.
A collection of mint condition aircraft in a mint condition facility, SDASM’s collection includes a Spitfire Mk. XVI, a Navy F6F Hellcat and an A-4 Skyhawk jet. Another unique feature of the Museum is its website where visitors can experience online ‘virtual exhibits’ such as the Consolidated/Convair Online Exhibition and many of the museum’s other attractions all from the comfort of your home, though for the true enthusiast there’s no substitute for the thrill of seeing the museum’s extraordinary collection of exhibits in person.
