The National Aeronautic Association (NAA) has announced that Doug Matthews has been selected as the 2025 recipient of the prestigious Frank G. Brewer Trophy. Established in 1943, the Brewer Trophy recognizes significant and enduring contributions to aerospace education in the United States and is permanently housed at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. Past recipients include industry leaders such as Edward Stimpson, Peggy Chabrian, the NASA Spacelink Team, Barrington Irving, and, most recently, the 2024 honoree Glendon Fraser.
“The Brewer Trophy serves as a testament to Doug’s extraordinary educational achievements,” said Amy Spowart, President and CEO of the NAA. “Doug’s unwavering dedication to fostering aerospace learning, from his early days as a student to his role as a mentor and instructor, exemplifies the transformative power of education, perseverance, and passion. His lifelong commitment is truly inspirational.”
For more than six decades, Matthews has dedicated himself to advancing aviation education worldwide. His pioneering methods have shaped training standards, inspired new industries, and improved educational opportunities for countless students. Considered one of the foremost vintage aircraft instructors, Matthews has flown and taught in a wide range of aircraft, including the Douglas SBD Dauntless, North American P-51 Mustang, T-6 Texan, F-86 Sabre, Lockheed T-33, Grumman F6F Hellcat, F8F Bearcat, Marchetti S-211, and Aero L-39. In addition to his aviation accomplishments, Matthews has supported future generations of leaders and aviators through philanthropy. In 1984, he established the Matthews Scholarship at Emory University’s Goizueta Business School, and he continues to fund the Matthews Aviation Scholarship, which helps young pilots pursue their FAA Commercial, Instrument, and Multi-Engine ratings.

“I am incredibly grateful and honored to receive this recognition,” said Matthews. “This award is not only a personal milestone but also a reflection of the many people who have supported me throughout my journey. I am thankful for the opportunities I’ve had and remain committed to helping the next generation of aviators succeed.”

Lou Nemeth, Vice President of Training Services and Chief Safety Officer (ret.), CAE, who nominated Matthews for the award, praised his impact: “Doug’s contributions to aviation education have left an indelible mark. His innovative training methods, comprehensive manuals, and rigorous classes have prepared thousands of pilots to excel with professionalism and safety. His legacy will continue to shape aviation for years to come.”
