Hangar 11‘s Curtiss P-40M Kittyhawk G-KITT has been wearing a “Red Tail” paint scheme since 2009 when it was repainted for its featured role in George Lucas’ movie “Red Tails“, released in 2012 which dramatized the exploits of the legendary Tuskegee Airmen during the Second World War.
In conjunction with its usual annual service the plane is being stripped down to bare metal, the performance of which has revealed several of the plane’s previous color schemes that had been applied to it over the decades as well as a number of the original Curtiss-Wright identification plates which had been obscured by layer upon layer of paint. The plane will be freshly repainted for the 2013 airshow season, however Peter Teichman, the owner of the Hanger 11 Collection is keeping the the new paint scheme for his P-40 a secret for now, though he hints that it will be a unique color scheme, not seen since the war as far as he’s aware.
