The Air Zoo Aerospace & Science Center Launches a Summer Full of Discovery, Thrills, and High-Flying Fun

This summer, the Air Zoo Aerospace & Science Center in Kalamazoo is offering a season packed with hands-on STEAM events, thrilling aircraft fly-ins, and the debut of a high-energy exhibit, Extreme Sports: Beyond Human Limits. With something for all ages, the Air Zoo invites guests to explore, learn, and take flight like never before.

The Air Zoo Aerospace & Science Center is set to soar into summer with an exciting lineup of events, programs, and exhibits designed to inspire curiosity, encourage exploration, and deliver unforgettable experiences for guests of all ages. From interactive educational days and historic aircraft fly-ins to an all-new traveling exhibit, this summer at the Air Zoo promises to be both thrilling and enriching.

The Air Zoo’s popular Summer STEAM Days, presented by Zoetis, return with three themed events filled with hands-on activities, live demonstrations, and take-home creations. Engineering STEAM Day kicks off the series on June 21, followed by Space Exploration STEAM Day on July 26, and Aviation STEAM Day on August 16. Each event runs from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and is free for all participants. These engaging activities are led by the Air Zoo’s Education Team along with several community partners.

Also returning this summer is the Discovery Series, presented by Honor Credit Union and supported by media sponsor Adams Outdoor Advertising. This series invites families and adults to experience the Air Zoo in creative and unexpected ways. On Saturday, June 28, “Silent Frames: A Live Scored Experience” will combine iconic silent cinema with live orchestral performance by local ensemble Silent but Deadly. On July 26, guests aged 21 and up can enjoy an evening of cosmic fun at Adult Space Camp, which includes cocktails, food, music, hands-on science activities, and exclusive after-hours access to the exhibits. Then, on August 23, the Air Zoo will host a special Top Gun Movie Night, where visitors can watch the beloved film surrounded by real historic aircraft. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early for themed activities and immersive experiences.

In partnership with the Michigan Flight Museum’s Air Adventures, the Air Zoo will also offer rare opportunities for guests to purchase rides on historic military aircraft. On July 12 and 13, visitors can fly aboard the iconic UH-1 Huey helicopter, and on August 16, the legendary C-46 “Hairless Joe” will be available for flights. Adding to the excitement, a brand-new traveling exhibit will soon make its debut. “Extreme Sports: Beyond Human Limits” is an immersive experience developed by Science North in partnership with the Ontario Science Centre. This hands-on exhibit explores the science, psychology, and technology behind some of the world’s most daring sports, such as wingsuit flying, ice climbing, surfing, and free diving. Through interactive challenges and inspiring stories, guests of all ages will gain a deeper understanding of how elite athletes push the boundaries of human performance. With a full season of exploration, education, and excitement ahead, the Air Zoo invites the community to join them in making this a summer to remember. Born in Milan, Italy, Moreno moved to the U.S. in 1999 to pursue a career as a commercial pilot. His aviation passion began early, inspired by his uncle, an F-104 Starfighter Crew Chief, and his father, a military traffic controller. Childhood adventures included camping outside military bases and watching planes at Aeroporto Linate. In 1999, he relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, to obtain his commercial pilot license, a move that became permanent. With 24 years in the U.S., he now flies full-time for a Part 91 business aviation company in Atlanta. He is actively involved with the Commemorative Air Force, the D-Day Squadron, and other aviation organizations. He enjoys life with his supportive wife and three wonderful children.
