Doc’s Friends, Wichita, Kansas, has announced that its B-29 DOC History Restored Tour will make a stop at Georgetown County Airport in Georgetown, South Carolina, from October 1-4, bringing two of WWII’s most recognizable aircraft together for public tours and ride experiences. Joining the Boeing B-29 Superfortress DOC will be the North American P-51D Mustang Gunfighter. Visitors will have the opportunity to see both aircraft up close during the four-day event, with cockpit and ramp tours available throughout the weekend.
Built in Wichita during WWII, DOC is one of 1,644 B-29 Superfortresses produced for the war effort and is now one of only two examples of the type still flying. The accompanying P-51 Gunfighter represents another iconic wartime design. Fewer than 150 of the approximately 15,000 Mustangs built during the war are believed to survive today. “These warbirds are more than historic aircraft—they are storytellers that connect us directly to the men and women who designed, built, flew, and maintained them during WWII,” said B-29 DOC CEO Josh Wells. “Having the B-29 and P-51 together on the same ramp gives people a rare opportunity to see two aircraft that played important and complementary roles in the war and to better understand the people and missions behind them.”
The pairing highlights two aircraft that often operated together during the latter stages of WWII. While the B-29 carried out long-range strategic bombing missions, the P-51 Mustang became renowned for its escort duties, helping protect Allied bombers from enemy fighters. “The B-29 and P-51 tell a powerful story of teamwork in the skies of WWII,” said P-51 Gunfighter pilot and tour coordinator Jeff Linebaugh. “The B-29 brought extraordinary range and striking power to the fight, while the P-51 provided the protection bombers needed in contested skies.”

Public access is scheduled for October 1 and 2 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on October 3 from noon to 5 p.m. B-29 DOC flight experiences will be offered on October 3 and 4, with flights scheduled for 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. The P-51 Gunfighter will offer ride flights from October 2 through 4 and will be displayed on the ramp when not flying. Admission for ramp and cockpit tours will be $10 per person or $20 per family, with tickets available at the gate.
