Appearances can be deceptive. Having worked at cosford for many years I can tell you from personal experience that the management there couldn’t run a bath. The many mistakes they’ve made over the years would make a very good comedy. It’s not funny, however, as there incompetence is destroying our heritage, not preserving it. I’m not the only one saying this. Paid staff, volunteers, enthusiasts and even the aviation media have rightly criticised them. The IWM management are the same. I implore anyone with an interest in aviation visit 1 of the smaller, properly run museums.
Which smaller properly run museum do you recommend?
Sorry I’ve only just seen your message. I have visited a number of aircraft museums across the UK over the years, but not all of them by any means. I would say those run by volunteers are the best, as its their passion, so they put the interests of aviation preservation etc 1st, and know what other enthusiasts want. I think things go wrong as soon as a museum gets big enough to have paid staff, especially management. To them it is just a job, and the museum purely a business., so they make decisions with that mindset, which usually means aviation preservation etc is a secondary priority, if at all. Don’t get me wrong the larger museums are impressive, which is to be expected as they will have more resources, thus usually more aircraft, hanger space and better displays. You have to remember though that is what the general public see, so its not surprising that RAF Cosford got the award, as the museum itself is good.. Its only the people within those museums, who unlike the public see behind the scenes, that truly understand what is going on. It is the damage, and even destruction of aviation, those running the museum entrusted to preserve it cause, due to their lack any degree of intelligence and/or common sense. They see and hear, only what they want to see and hear, even when feedback, facts, figures etc indicate the exact opposite. I appreciate that people can have vastly different opinions on the same thing, and that is only right. I’m not expecting everyone to agree with what I’ve said. All I can say is to go out there, get the evidence, and make up your own mind.
