The Museum of Flight, Seattle, Washington, will host retired U.S. Navy diver Dave McCampbell on Aug. 22 for a presentation covering his work documenting and searching for WWII aircraft lost across the remote islands of the South Pacific. The program, titled “Beneath the Surface,” begins at 11 a.m. and will feature photographs and stories from McCampbell’s travels through Micronesia. Alongside his wife, Sherry, McCampbell spent years sailing between remote islands and visiting aircraft crash sites connected to the Pacific War. McCampbell spent his naval career in Surface Warfare and the Special Operations/Diving and Salvage communities.

As a senior Diving Officer, he also worked with the U.S. National Park Service to document WWII combat sites across the Pacific. Following his retirement from the Navy, McCampbell began ocean cruising with Sherry, an accomplished sailor. The couple has separately circumnavigated the Caribbean and spent six years crossing the Pacific, including 18 months in Micronesia. They are currently in western Southeast Asia and are 19 years into their planned circumnavigation of the world. McCampbell’s interest in WWII aviation in the Pacific is also deeply personal. His father, Capt. David McCampbell, was a U.S. Navy aviator during WWII, the Navy’s top-scoring ace and a recipient of the Medal of Honor. The Aug. 22 presentation is free with general admission.
