The Museum of Flight, Seattle, WA, will mark Memorial Day with a program honoring the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) of WWII, featuring historian and author Katherine Sharp Landdeck. The program is scheduled for May 25 at 2 p.m. and will focus on the WASP, the women who flew military aircraft during WWII. Landdeck’s presentation is based on her book The Women with Silver Wings and will include recognition of the women who were killed while serving in the WASP ranks. The talk will include an audience question-and-answer session, followed by a book signing. The program is included with museum admission. Memorial Day programming will also include patriotic music performed by the Boeing Employee Concert Band at noon.

Landdeck is an associate professor at Texas Woman’s University and is widely recognized for her work on the history of the WASP. She has received several awards for her research and has appeared as an expert on NPR’s Morning Edition, PBS, and the History Channel. Her work has also appeared in The Washington Post, The Atlantic, Time, and aviation and academic publications. The museum will also offer free admission for veterans and active-duty military during Memorial Day weekend, from Saturday, May 23, through Monday, May 25. Veterans will receive free admission throughout the weekend without needing to provide proof of service. Active-duty military personnel are eligible for free admission through the Blue Star Museums Program from Armed Forces Day, May 16, through Labor Day, September 7. The offer includes up to five family members and applies to National Guard and Reserve members. A military ID is required, and the offer is available onsite only.
