Finland’s premiere air show, the Lappeenranta International Airshow (LIAS), will be held at Lappeenranta International Airport June 14-16. This year’s event celebrates the 95th Anniversary of the founding of the Finnish Air Force which was founded on March 6, 1918 as the Army Corps of Aviation. In commemoration of the anniversary the show will be hosting a wide array of Scandinavian aircraft both past and present on display and in the air.

The Royal Norwegian Historic Squadron will field a pair of de Havilland Vampires finished in Finnish Air Force livery who will perform a formation flight with a Finnish Air Force Fouga Magister and a Gloster Gauntlet Mk II, the sole surviving plane of its type. The formation is the first time planes of this type have flown together since the 1960s. Each of the formation participants will also perform an aerobatic display, with the Vampires performing as a choreographed pair.
Finland’s Border Guard Air Patrol Squadron will perform a formation flight demonstration featuring an AgustaWestland AW119 Koala, an Agusta-Bell AB 412 Grifone and a Dornier Do 228.
The Finnish Air Force will be fielding a contingent of aircraft including aerial displays by BAE Systems Hawk MK 51, Boeing F-18C/D Hornets and precision flying and aerobatic displays by the Finnish Air Force Midnight Hawks demonstration team.
The Royal Jordanian Air Force’s Royal Jordanian Falcons Aerobatics Team will perform in their Extra EA-300Ls and there are additional aerial displays planned featuring several Pitts Specials, a Douglas DC-3, a PIK-5 glider and helicopter demonstrations including a Vietnam-era Bell UH-1 Iroquois and a Finnish Army Aviation NHIndustries NH90. Additionally, there will be scores of military and civilian aircraft on static display.
Friday will be a fly-in day with no formal aerial displays planned, though arriving aircraft and practice flights will be ongoing throughout the day. Saturday and Sunday will feature full air show programs with gates opening at 10AM.

With 24 years in the U.S., he now flies full-time for a Part 91 business aviation company in Atlanta.
