On the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day, The National Lottery Heritage Fund has announced a major investment of £13.7 million to support the preservation and transformation of two iconic military heritage sites in the UK. The funding will help revamp the RAF Museum Midlands in Cosford and create a new Royal Marines Experience at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard—two projects that aim to safeguard and share the remarkable stories of British service personnel, particularly their pivotal roles during the Second World War.
Celebrating History and Legacy
The RAF and Royal Marines were instrumental in securing Allied victory during WWII, demonstrating immense courage and sacrifice. Today, their legacies are preserved through museum collections, exhibitions, and historic artifacts that continue to educate and inspire future generations.
RAF Museum Midlands: £9.3 Million Transformation
The RAF Museum Midlands has been awarded £9,286,778 to develop its “Inspiring Everyone: RAF Museum Midlands Development Programme.” This transformative project will unlock access to the museum’s vast collection—of which less than 1% is currently on public display—by creating a new Collections Hub and modern exhibition spaces. The redevelopment includes the restoration of a 1930s hangar into an exhibition and learning centre focused on STEM, art, geography, and design. A new gallery will explore the RAF’s evolving mission since 1980, highlighting its 24/7 defense roles across air, land, sea, space, and cyber domains. Outside the museum walls, a revitalized public realm will host outdoor events and learning spaces. A three-year engagement program will further connect the public with RAF stories through activities on-site, off-site, and online. “Thanks to National Lottery players, this support will enable us to care for and share our collections in new and ambitious ways,” said Maggie Appleton, CEO of the RAF Museum. “We look forward to launching this exciting project with a celebration event and Battle of Britain Memorial Flight flypast on 31 May.”
Royal Marines Experience at Portsmouth: £4.4 Million Investment
The National Museum of the Royal Navy has been awarded £4.4 million to establish a groundbreaking new attraction—the Royal Marines Experience—within the historic Boathouse 6 at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. Telling the story of the Royal Marines from their origins in 1664 to the elite Commando Force of today, the immersive new museum will offer hands-on, interactive exhibits and multimedia displays that explore the ethos, physicality, and resilience of the Corps. Visitors will have the chance to test themselves with challenges inspired by Royal Marines training and missions. The £15 million project will also include a new Special Exhibition Gallery—one of the largest of its kind in southern England—and a Royal Marines-themed Laser Quest arena. “The Royal Marines’ story of duty, daring, and sacrifice deserves to be shared and celebrated,” said Admiral Sir Ben Key, First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff. “This new museum will ensure that their remarkable history continues to inspire future generations.” Matthew Sheldon, CEO of the National Museum of the Royal Navy, added: “This funding marks a major milestone in our mission to share the incredible stories of the Royal Marines. On VE Day, we remember the veterans of 80 years ago while looking ahead to telling new generations about their courage, commitment, and service.”
A Lasting Legacy
Eilish McGuinness, Chief Executive of The National Lottery Heritage Fund, said: “As we mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day, it’s clear how central our armed forces are to the UK’s shared history. These projects will unlock hidden collections, bring fresh perspectives, and create opportunities for communities to engage with RAF and Royal Marines heritage for decades to come.” The investments aim to protect the past while connecting it to the present and future—ensuring that the stories of service, sacrifice, and resilience remain accessible and relevant to all.
