Press Release
The RAF Museum Midlands is set to launch an exciting new chapter with The Big Lift Off, a free family event taking place on Saturday, 31 May from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. This special celebration marks the beginning of a transformative site-wide redevelopment and invites visitors of all ages to enjoy a thrilling day of aerial spectacles, live entertainment, and interactive activities — all with free entry.
Highlights of the event include a spectacular Lancaster flypast by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and a dramatic skydiving display, with parachutists landing directly on Museum grounds (both weather permitting). On the ground, families can enjoy performances by the RAF Cosford Pipes and Drums, a vintage 1940s crooner, and the RAF Cosford Voluntary Band. Visitors will also have a rare opportunity to step aboard the iconic Chinook helicopter ‘Bravo November.’
A wide range of hands-on activities and attractions will be available throughout the day, including rocket car races, mystery prize games, photo booths with RAF uniforms, and the chance to witness new artefacts arriving at the Museum in a unique fashion — delivered by skydivers, vintage vehicles, bicycles, and on foot.
The Big Lift Off also marks the launch of The Crate Escape, the Museum’s latest fundraising appeal aimed at supporting the development of a brand-new Collections Hub. This facility will house over 50,000 historic objects, many of which will be accessible to the public for the very first time. As part of the day’s festivities, visitors will witness the symbolic first delivery of these artefacts from off-site storage at MOD Stafford to the Museum.
Guests can enjoy delicious food and refreshments from BBQ and ice cream vendors while soaking in the vibrant atmosphere. The Museum’s permanent exhibits, including over 80 historic aircraft, flight simulators, an airfield-inspired playground, and interactive galleries, will also be open for exploration. The Museum’s major transformation project is scheduled to begin later this year, with completion anticipated in 2027. This ambitious redevelopment is made possible thanks to the support of The National Lottery Heritage Fund and the RAF Museum’s own investment. Admission to The Big Lift Off is free, but pre-booking is recommended. Tickets and further information are available at rafmuseum.org/midlands. The Museum is open daily from 10:00am, with free admission year-round.
