PRESS RELEASE
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA. (August 27th, 2022) – Like so many organizations, the Military Aviation Museum has faced challenges over the last couple of years and has not been immune to the labor shortages that have affected nearly every business and museum. After a careful review of the current aircraft maintenance constraints, the museum has made the difficult decision to revise their flying activities for the remainder of 2022. This revision will temporarily reduce the total number of aircraft maintained in flying status within the collection so that each airplane retained on the flying list will continue to receive the highest standard of care and workmanship from our aircraft maintainers.
Museum Director, Keegan Chetwynd explained further, “Safety is our utmost priority with the operation of our collection. Secondary to that is our desire to deliver a great experience to our air show audiences, and with a reduced complement of aircraft flying the remainder of the season, it will not be possible to host Warbirds Over the Beach as planned on October 1st & 2nd. We will be working with our mechanics and aircrews to announce a revised date in 2023.”
The silver lining will be the introduction of the Tanks and Tracks event on the original air show dates of October 1st and 2nd 2022. The largest gathering of WWII Armored Vehicles in Virginia Beach, this two-day event will feature a variety of WWII-era tanks, armored and tracked vehicles, artillery pieces, and flame-throwers. In addition, there will be a Living History encampment, tank and weapons demonstrations, guided tours of the RAF Goxhill Watch Tower, and special opportunities to ride in a tank. There will be a selection of food trucks each day.
