The Yorkshire Air Museum, Elvington, England, will host an exhibition of aviation artwork by award-winning illustrator and comic artist Keith Burns on Saturday, October 17. Burns has worked as a comic artist for nearly 20 years, with much of his work focused on WWII aviation. He has collaborated with writer Garth Ennis on titles including Johnny Red, Out of the Blue and The Boys, while his work has also appeared in 2000 AD, Commando and at the RAF Club in London.
A member of the Guild of Aviation Artists, Burns has twice won the Aviation Painting of the Year Award. He has also illustrated 12 Ladybird books covering WWII and recently completed the 6,000th cover of Commando comic. The exhibition will give visitors an opportunity to view Burns’ aviation artwork and meet the artist. Yorkshire Air Museum Marketing and Communications Manager Jerry Ibbotson said Burns’ combination of comic art and aviation made the exhibition a natural fit for the museum. “Keith Burns is a real legend in the world of comic and graphic novel art, and he also has a real passion for aviation,” Ibbotson said. “His work really jumps off the page, and you can almost smell hear the rattle of machine guns in his images.” Burns will be available during the event to discuss his work and sign artwork.
DC Thomson, publisher of Commando, is supporting the exhibition. The company has granted the museum permission to display some of Burns’ work and is providing posters featuring his 6,000th Commando cover, which depicts a Halifax bomber. Visitors will be able to purchase the posters and have them signed by Burns. The exhibition will take place during a normal museum admissions day, so no additional ticket is required.
