NASM Open House at the Udvar-Hazy Center This Saturday

The National Air & Space Museum is holding their second annual behind the scenes Open House between 10am and 3pm on Saturday January 24th at their Udvar-Hazy Center facility beside Dulles Airport in Chantilly, Virginia. Visitors will be able to go onto the shop floor in the workshop area, and see artifacts not yet on public display, such as the Martin B-26 Marauder known as “Flak Bait” as she undergoes restoration.

Visitors will get to…

– Meet curators, conservators, archivists, and other specialists, and learn how they care for objects in the Museum’s collection.
– Tour the Mary Baker Engen Restoration Hangar and see the Museum’s current projects.
– Tour the Emil Buehler Conservation Laboratory and learn about the science behind artifact preservation and care.
– Learn how the aircraft are hung for display in the Boeing Aviation Hangar.*
– Participate in hands-on activities designed for adults and children.
– See how the most fragile artifacts are stored and cared for.
– Discover the research that is needed before a restoration project can begin.
– Get some tips for photographing objects in the Museum from a staff photographer.

National Air and Space Society members are invited to a hospitality suite in the Executive Board Room during the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center Open House. While the Open House does not require a ticket, the hospitality suite will. If you are a museum member and wish to visit the hospitality suite, please click HERE. Richard Mallory Allnutt's aviation passion ignited at the 1974 Farnborough Airshow. Raised in 1970s Britain, he was immersed in WWII aviation lore. Moving to Washington DC, he frequented the Smithsonian’s National Air & Space Museum, meeting aviation legends.

After grad school, Richard worked for Lockheed-Martin but stayed devoted to aviation, volunteering at museums and honing his photography skills. In 2013, he became the founding editor of Warbirds News, now Vintage Aviation News. With around 800 articles written, he focuses on supporting grassroots aviation groups.

Richard values the connections made in the aviation community and is proud to help grow Vintage Aviation News.
