The Commemorative Air Force’s Mile High Wing, Broomfield, CO, has brought a North American T-28A Trojan into its fleet. The aircraft, now called as High Maintenance, is registered as N92TL. It arrived in Broomfield in March 2026, a few months after the CAF acquired it in late 2025. Since then, work has been underway to get it ready for use. That has included early ground school sessions for members, with the longer-term goal of offering ride flights. The CAF has another T-28 in its system, based with the High Sky Wing in Midland, Texas, where it is used to highlight the post-WWII period of military aviation.
A Postwar Trainer
The North American T-28 Trojan entered service in 1949 as a replacement for the T-6 Texan, intended to prepare pilots transitioning into jet aircraft. The U.S. Air Force used the type into the 1960s, while other branches continued flying it into the 1980s. The aircraft also saw widespread use internationally before being retired in 1984. The T-28A variant, like High Maintenance, is powered by an 800-horsepower radial engine. Later versions of the aircraft were fitted with more powerful engines and adapted for light attack duties in addition to their training role. The type was used in combat in Southeast Asia, including during the Vietnam War, and also appeared in service with the North Vietnamese Air Force after a defection in 1963. The aircraft carries a yellow, red, and silver scheme that was typical of U.S. military trainers from that period. Bright paint made it easier to spot aircraft in busy training areas, especially for instructors keeping an eye on student pilots.

Joining the Mile High Wing
Now based with the Mile High Wing, High Maintenance is being integrated into the unit’s regular activities. Early ground school sessions have focused on familiarizing members with the aircraft’s systems and operation, part of the process of bringing it fully online. The Wing plans to introduce public ride opportunities in the future, offering flights in a Cold War-era trainer aircraft. Based in Broomfield, the Mile High Wing operates as part of the CAF’s wider network and relies on volunteer support to maintain and fly its aircraft while presenting aviation history to the public.
