National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force Offers Hands-On “Bombardier School” Experience Featuring Authentic Norden Bombsight

This October, the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force offers a rare opportunity to experience World War II bombardier training firsthand. During the two-day “Bombardier School” program, participants will use authentic Norden Bombsight equipment to plot flight paths and simulate bombing missions under the guidance of expert Dr. Tim Moore. Designed for both students and adults, the program blends mathematics, engineering, and history for an unforgettable hands-on learning experience.

This limited-seating program offers both student and adult sessions on October 14th & 15th at the museum.

This fall, the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force in Pooler, GA, on October 14, 2025, invites students, educators, and aviation enthusiasts to experience what it was like to train as a World War II bombardier. The museum’s immersive Bombardier School program, led by renowned Norden Bombsight expert Dr. Tim Moore, offers participants a rare opportunity to operate one of the most secret and revolutionary devices of the air war—the Norden Bombsight. The two-day educational program brings history to life as attendees learn to plot flight paths using dead reckoning and perform precision bombing simulations guided by real mathematical and engineering principles. Under Dr. Moore’s instruction, participants will gain firsthand insight into the technology, skill, and split-second decisions that shaped Allied air operations during World War II.

Bombardier School

The student session will take place on October 14, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., lasting approximately two hours. It is recommended for students in grades 9 through 12 who have a basic understanding of geometry and trigonometry. Two adult sessions are also scheduled: October 14 at 1:00 p.m. and October 15 at 10:00 a.m. Each session will last about three hours and is open to the general public, ages 18 and up. All sessions include guided, hands-on use of authentic WWII-era equipment and expert instruction from Dr. Moore.

The National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force honors the courage, valor, and sacrifice of the men and women who served in the largest air armada in history. Through immersive exhibits, rare artifacts, and personal stories, the museum preserves and interprets the history of the Eighth Air Force and its vital role in achieving victory during World War II. Exhibit highlights include a fully restored B-17 Flying Fortress and the acclaimed Mission Experience, a multimedia theater that places visitors inside a simulated WWII bombing mission using authentic combat footage. The museum is located at 175 Bourne Avenue, Pooler, Georgia. Born in Milan, Italy, Moreno moved to the U.S. in 1999 to pursue a career as a commercial pilot. His aviation passion began early, inspired by his uncle, an F-104 Starfighter Crew Chief, and his father, a military traffic controller. Childhood adventures included camping outside military bases and watching planes at Aeroporto Linate. In 1999, he relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, to obtain his commercial pilot license, a move that became permanent. With 24 years in the U.S., he now flies full-time for a Part 91 business aviation company in Atlanta. He is actively involved with the Commemorative Air Force, the D-Day Squadron, and other aviation organizations. He enjoys life with his supportive wife and three wonderful children.
