On Saturday, February 1, 2025, the Planes of Fame Air Museum in Chino, California, invites aviation enthusiasts to its special “Hangar Talk” event featuring a flying demonstration of the rare de Havilland DH.98 Mosquito, one of the most iconic aircraft of World War II. The event kicks off with a “Hangar Talk” at 10:30 AM, where attendees can delve into the history and significance of the de Havilland Mosquito. Known as the “Wooden Wonder” for its innovative wooden construction, the Mosquito played a vital role during World War II in reconnaissance, bombing missions, and as a fighter-bomber.

Members of the Museum’s Education team, alongside the Historical Unit of Southern California (HUSC), will provide a detailed examination of the battle. Highlights include an in-depth look at the battle from D-Day, February 19, 1945, through its conclusion 37 days later. The HUSC will perform a moving tribute to the iconic second flag-raising on Iwo Jima, followed by a discussion of how the powerful photograph of this moment became a symbol of unity for the nation during the war effort. The presentation will also explore Admiral Chester Nimitz’s famous words, “uncommon valor was a common virtue,” by examining the heroic actions of the 27 Medal of Honor recipients from the battle. The session will conclude by reflecting on the battle’s significance and its impact on the outcome of World War II.
