Heavy Attack Squadron 8 (VAH-8), nicknamed Fireballers, was a US Navy squadron based at NAS Whidbey Island, Washington. It was established on May 1, 1957, and primarily operated the Douglas A-3 Skywarrior. The squadron played an important role during the Navy’s expansion of carrier-based heavy attack aircraft. VAH-8 trained for missions involving carrier operations and long distances as part of the Pacific Fleet. Nine Heavy Attack Squadron 8 A3D-2 Skywarrior aircraft, operating from the USS Midway in the Western Pacific, March 13, 1960. The squadron traveled about 4,800 miles back to their home base at NAS Whidbey Island. During the flight, they stopped to refuel at NAS Barbers Point and NAS Alameda. The entire trip took 10.9 hours, and the planes arrived at Whidbey Island on March 15. Heavy Attack Squadron 8 showed that the Skywarrior could do more than just heavy attack missions. On March 13, 1962, during Exercise Potshot, the squadron’s A3D aircraft took off from the USS Midway carrying US Marine Corps paratroopers. The squadron transported the paratroopers and then dropped them over a target area at Camp Pendleton, California. The exercise demonstrated the Skywarrior’s flexibility and how carrier-based heavy attack aircraft could work alongside Marine forces.

Heavy Attack Squadron 8’s most important operational period was during the Vietnam War, when its Skywarriors deployed on aircraft carriers operating in the Yankee Station and Dixie Station areas. The squadron’s first recorded deployment to Vietnam started on March 6, 1965, when its A-3B planes boarded the USS Midway. These aircraft stayed with the carrier until November 23, 1965, while taking part in the growing US air campaign in Southeast Asia. Heavy Attack Squadron 8 returned to combat missions the next year. From May 12 to December 3, 1966, its A-3Bs operated on the USS Constellation. The deployment placed the squadron’s heavy attack aircraft in the challenging setting of ongoing carrier operations off Vietnam. For its last Vietnam deployment, VAH-8 again joined the Constellation, this time flying the KA-3B Skywarrior from April 29 to December 4, 1967. The aircraft could also refuel other carrier planes during long combat missions. By this time, the squadron’s Skywarriors were no longer used only for the heavy-attack missions Heavy Attack Squadron 8 was originally designed for. They had also become useful for many other carrier tasks, including combat support and aerial refueling. After more than ten years of service, VAH-8 was disbanded on January 17, 1968, at NAS Whidbey Island.
