Built in 1945, the same year as DOC, the North American P-51D Mustang Gunfighter served with the U.S. Army Air Forces and was assigned to the “Mighty Eighth” Air Force in England near the end of World War II. The pairing of DOC and Gunfighter honors the vital roles both aircraft played in securing Allied air superiority during the war. “The shared legacies of the B-29 Superfortress and P-51 Mustang showcase two great stories of America’s superior air power during World War II,” said Josh Wells, executive director of B-29 DOC. “Having Gunfighter join the B-29 DOC History Restored Tour allows us to expand our educational outreach and bring to life the stories of the brave men and women who built, maintained, and flew these aircraft in defense of freedom. Seeing both of these icons on tour together offers a powerful, immersive way for the public to connect with the legacy of the Greatest Generation.”

Flight experiences aboard both aircraft are available throughout the weekend, with ride flights scheduled for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

One of only two airworthy B-29 Superfortresses remaining in the world, DOC is a veteran of the 1,644 bombers built by Boeing in Wichita during the war. The P-51 Mustang, which joined the war effort in its later years, was instrumental as a long-range escort fighter for both B-17 and B-29 bombing missions.

Gunfighter’s mission has always been to educate, honor, and inspire,” said Jeff Linebaugh, pilot and operations officer for P-51 Gunfighter. “Joining forces with DOC helps us fulfill that mission in a powerful way. Offering flight experiences in these legendary aircraft isn’t just about the thrill—it’s about making a meaningful connection to the past. It’s something people carry with them for life.”
