The 73rd edition of EAA AirVenture Oshkosh will be held July 20-26. This year’s movie schedule begins on July 18 and concludes on July 24, with no screenings planned for July 22 or July 25 because of the convention’s night air shows. Most films will begin at 8:30 p.m., while the July 20 and July 24 programs are scheduled to start at 8:15 p.m. The series begins July 18 with a 40th anniversary screening of Top Gun. Before the film, Lt. Cmdr. Lloyd “Bozo” Abel, who helped prepare Tom Cruise for his time in the cockpit of the F-14 during production, will share his experiences working on the movie. The following evening features Flying Misfits, the feature-length pilot for the television series Black Sheep Squadron. Author Stephen Chapis, whose recent book examines the series and its history, is scheduled to appear as a guest speaker before the screening.

The July 20 program will begin with a behind-the-scenes presentation on the upcoming biographical film Jimmy, which chronicles the life of actor and military aviator Jimmy Stewart. The evening will continue with a screening of the 1955 film Strategic Air Command, starring Stewart as a former military pilot recalled to active duty during the Cold War. Documentary film The Rescue will be shown on July 21. The film follows B-25 owner and pilot Larry Kelly as he travels to China to retrace the route of the 1942 Doolittle Raid and visit locations connected to the crews forced to bail out following the historic mission against Japan. Following the night air show break, the theater will resume programming on July 23 with Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. Air show pilot Susan Dacy is scheduled to speak before the screening about flying high-performance Boeing Stearman aircraft.

The final film of the series, Memphis Belle, will be presented on July 24. Based on the story of the famed B-17 Flying Fortress crew, the film depicts the bomber’s final combat mission over Europe during WWII. Producer Catherine Wyler, along with members of the film’s cast and crew, is expected to attend as special guests.
