The Vulcan to the Sky Trust (VTST) has secured confirmation of its long-term future at Doncaster Sheffield Airport, following ongoing discussions with the City of Doncaster Council (CDC). The iconic Vulcan XH558, which has been based at Doncaster Sheffield Airport since 2011, faced uncertainty after its lease with Peel Holdings was set to expire in June 2023. Compounding this challenge was news of the airport’s imminent closure, prompting the charity to search for a new home.
Discussions with CDC have progressed, and as the council prepares to announce a new operator for the airport, the VTST has received confirmation in principle of its long-term presence at the site.
Marc Walters, Chief Executive of VTST, expressed his enthusiasm: “We are delighted that ongoing conversations with the City of Doncaster Council and the team leading the bid to reopen Doncaster Sheffield Airport have resulted in confirmation of our longer-term future at the airport.
“This is fantastic news for the charity and its supporters. XH558 is in the perfect location, given her history and links with the airport, formerly RAF Finningley. We hope this development will support our mission to tell the story of XH558 and expand our educational programs, inspiring young people to pursue exciting careers in aerospace and engineering.
“While there are still details to finalize, the support from CDC to remain at the airport in Doncaster means a great deal to everyone involved.” Christian Foster, Programme Director for South Yorkshire Airport City, the initiative dedicated to reopening the airport, shared his support: “We are excited to work with VTST to establish a lease that provides long-term security. Vulcan XH558 has called Doncaster Sheffield Airport home since 2011, attracting thousands of visitors to the area. Enthusiasts flocked to see her fly, and later, thousands explored the hangar to learn more about this extraordinary piece of aviation history.
“The charity’s ambitious plans to create the Vulcan Experience are inspiring, and we hope these plans come to fruition. For now, it is crucial that XH558’s presence in Doncaster is extended, giving supporters another opportunity to witness this remarkable feat of engineering up close.” To support the Vulcan to the Sky Trust (VTST), click HERE.
