Two of the most iconic aircraft from World War II, the Boeing B-29 Superfortress “DOC” and the North American P-51 Mustang “Gunfighter,” are set to arrive at Albuquerque International Sunport on September 23-24 as part of the B-29 DOC History Restored Tour. This special tour stop will offer the public a rare chance to experience history in flight. Ride flights will be available aboard both aircraft on Tuesday, Sept. 23, and Wednesday, Sept. 24.

B-29 DOC is one of only two airworthy B-29 Superfortresses remaining from nearly 4,000 built during World War II — and one of just 1,644 built at Boeing’s Wichita, Kansas, facility. Restored to flying condition after decades on static display, DOC now serves as a living tribute to the men and women who designed, built, maintained, and flew these aircraft during the war.

The P-51 Gunfighter also boasts a rich history. Built at North American Aviation’s Inglewood, California, plant, the aircraft was delivered to the U.S. Army Air Forces in March 1945 and deployed to England with the legendary Eighth Air Force. After the war in Europe ended, it returned to the United States, serving with the Air National Guard in Wyoming, New Mexico, Illinois, and Kentucky before being retired from military service in 1956. Today, Gunfighter tours the country, offering flight experiences and honoring those who served. To purchase rides on Gunfighter, click HERE.

“The History Restored Tour provides a unique opportunity for people to get up close and personal with history and climb inside the airplanes that helped protect freedom at home and abroad during World War II,” said Josh Wells, B-29 DOC executive director. “People don’t just take a ride on these historic warbirds. They feel the thunder under their feet, the weight of history in the cockpit, and they walk away with a whole new appreciation for what the Greatest Generation endured. It’s not just thrilling; it’s humbling.” Please note: The Albuquerque stop will feature ride flights only — no ground tours will be offered. Following the Albuquerque visit, both aircraft will continue west for a three-week joint tour that includes stops in California and Arizona.
